What type of pressure washer do I need?

There are two types of pressure washers: electric and gas. The latter are generally designed for heavy-duty cleaning tasks, have much higher maximum pressure settings and cost much more money. As such, for this list, we will focus only on electric pressure washers, as they cover virtually every domestic cleaning task you can imagine.

What do you want to use your pressure washer for?

Pressure washers can generally be organized into three categories, according to their maximum pressure rating:

  • The entry-level cleaners are those with a maximum pressure of around 1,450 psi. These models are good for cleaning small items like bicycles or garden furniture.
  • Pressure washers with a maximum pressure of between 1,450 and 1,740 psi are mid-level products, better used for cleaning fences, yards and dirty cars.
  • If you want a really heavy cleaning done, then look for a pressure washer with a maximum pressure of more than 1,740 psi. If you are facing very stained pavements or SUVs covered with mud, this is your best option.

Maximum pressure is not the only way to assess whether a particular model is right for you. If the manufacturer includes it, also look for the “psi nominal pressure” of the washing machine. This is the average pressure that each washing machine can maintain over a long period.

What accessories do I need for different cleaning tasks?

Before pressing the Buy Now button, it’s worth stopping and checking which tools are included. Most pressure washers come in a variety of different packages, all with different tools in the box, and the confusingly similar product names make it easy to buy the wrong one by mistake. If the hose is too short, may I need an extension rod? Maybe you need an angled wand to clean the channel? If you want to tackle specific jobs, such as cleaning patios or cars, you will get the best results with brushes and nozzles designed specifically for the task at hand.

What other characteristics do you need to consider?

The water flow rate is another specification that you will see shortening. This indicates the amount of water that passes through the washing machine per hour. Five to 10 gallons per minute (GPM) is approximately average. Clearly, the more water is delivered, the faster the cleaning will be done.

Another thing to consider is the length of the hose. It is possible to use an extension cord, but it is essential that you use one that is rated for an adequate amperage (13 amps minimum) and suitable for outdoor use. Water and electricity are not the best couples. You also have to think about the weight and size of the machine. Some models come with retractable handles for easier storage and all the units we have reviewed have wheels for portability.

How dangerous are pressure washers?

Pressure washers can be extremely dangerous, so always wear goggles, proper footwear (a jet of water against your bare toes will result in a visit to the hospital), and never, spray them with you or someone close to you. High-pressure water jets can cause serious injuries to the skin and soft tissues. These are anything but big boys’ toys.
