Treatment

There are several treatments available for wrinkles that help to smooth them so they are less obvious.

Medicines

  • Topical retinoids. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids – such as tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A) and tazarotene (Avage, Tazorac) – that are applied to the skin can reduce fine wrinkles, blemishes, and rough skin.

Because retinoids can make skin burn more easily, you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear protective clothing every day. Retinoids can cause redness, dryness, itching, and a burning or tingling sensation.

  • Anti-wrinkle creams are available over the counter. The effectiveness of anti-wrinkle creams depends, in part, on the active ingredients. Retinol, antioxidants and some peptides can produce minimal to discrete improvements in wrinkles. With over-the-counter wrinkle creams, the results, if any, are limited and usually last a short time, since these creams contain fewer active ingredients than the prescribed creams.

Surgical procedures and other techniques

You will find a variety of skin rejuvenation techniques, injectables, fillers and surgical procedures to smooth wrinkles. Each one has its own potential results and side effects. Some studies indicate that a combination of treatments can produce the most satisfactory results.

  • Treatments with laser, light source and radiofrequency. In exfoliation by ablative laser (which causes laceration), a laser beam destroys the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and heats the one below (dermis), which stimulates the growth of the new collagen fibers. As the wound heals, softer and firmer skin forms.
  • Chemical exfoliation The doctor applies an acid to the affected areas that burn the outer layer of the skin to eliminate senile spots and freckles, as well as wrinkles. Depending on the depth of the exfoliation, it is likely to take several weeks until you notice a difference. The redness lasts several weeks.
  • Dermabrasion. This procedure, also known as “dermaplaning”, involves sanding (brushing) the surface layer of the skin with a rotating brush. Brushing removes the surface layer of the skin and allows the growth of a new layer.
  • Microdermabrasion. Similar to dermabrasion, this technique only removes a thin layer of skin. In general, this technique requires several treatments to obtain results. You may notice slight redness or a burning sensation in the treated areas. Microdermabrasion produces moderate and temporary results.
  • Botulinum toxin type A (Botox). When injected in small doses into specific muscles, the Botox prevents the muscles from contracting. When the muscles can not contract, the skin looks smoother and less wrinkled.

The Botox works well for the wrinkles that are between the eyebrows and along the forehead, and for the crow’s feet that are made at the corners of the eyes. In general, the results last from three to four months. To maintain the results, it is necessary to repeat the injections.

  • Soft tissue fillings. Soft tissue fillers, which contain fat, collagen and hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Juvederm, and others), can be injected into the deeper wrinkles of the face. They fill and smooth both wrinkles and furrows. You may experience temporary swelling, redness and bruising in the treated area. It is likely that the procedure should be repeated several times a year.
  • Skin stretch Several devices use heat to stretch the skin. This non-invasive treatment produces mild to discrete results that usually progress gradually over four to six months. This procedure does not require a recovery period.
  • Facelift The facelift procedure supposes the elimination of excess skin and fat in the lower part of the face and neck, as well as the stretching of the muscle and the hidden connective tissue. In general, the results last between 5 and 10 years. Healing periods may be prolonged after a facelift. Almost always, bruising and swelling are visible for several weeks after surgery.

Keep in mind that the results vary depending on the location and depth of the wrinkles. Nothing stops the aging process of the skin, so it is likely that you should repeat the treatments to maintain the benefits.
